Swab Characteristics & Microscopy

The PE Pumpkin spore swab contains spore material collected directly from gill tissue by touching a sterile cotton-tipped swab to the spore-producing surface. Spore material includes both free spores and gill tissue fragments. Under magnification, spores are subellipsoid to ellipsoid, dark purplish-brown, approximately 9–11 x 6–8 micrometres — consistent with the PE family’s larger-than-average sizing. Cell walls are thick and the germ pore is prominent. To prepare a slide, rub the swab tip gently in a drop of sterile water on a microscope slide to release spore material.
