Mushroom Spore Prints

A spore print is the deposit of spores a mushroom drops onto a surface beneath its cap. Ours are collected on foil in our Ottawa lab under 99.99% HEPA-filtered laminar flow, dried, folded and sealed. We offer prints of Golden Teacher, B+, Amazonian, Wikidzon and Blue Meanie, all Psilocybe cubensis, for microscopy and taxonomy research.

Why researchers choose prints
A print shows two things a syringe can’t: the colour of the deposit and the radial pattern of the gills that dropped it. Psilocybe cubensis prints are dark purple-brown, and the colour varies between strains and even between prints of the same strain. A print is also a long-lasting dry format: keep it folded in its foil inside a sealed bag, somewhere cool, dark and dry.

From print to slide
Scrape a few spores from the print with a sterile blade into a drop of water on a slide, add a cover slip and examine at 400× to 1000×. Our guide How to make a spore print (and read its colour) explains how prints form and how to take spores from one onto a slide, with photos from our lab.

Print, syringe or swab?
Choose a print for colour study and long storage, a spore syringe when you want a ready-to-use suspension (26 strains), or a spore swab for a compact sample. Storage for all three formats is covered in How to store spore syringes, prints and swabs.

Spore print FAQ

What colour is a Psilocybe cubensis spore print?
Dark purple-brown. A print alone can’t identify a mushroom; microscopy and other features are needed.

How do I store a spore print?
Folded in its foil, inside a sealed, labelled bag, kept cool, dark and dry.

Where do you ship?
Worldwide except Egypt and Turkey, with free untracked shipping in Canada and free shipping over $50 CAD. See Shipping, and check your local law first: Are mushroom spores legal?
